Powder Blue Tang

Postby H20VooDoo on Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:11 am

Sorry, I'm not posting any pic's as I don't even have one :) I read that this fish will eat ANY kind of algae and am considering putting one in my tank to help with the turf algae but it's a big fish and will definately increase the bioload so does anyone have experience with this fish and the type of algae it eats?

It's an ich magnet. Key will be to get a good specimen and doing a dip before adding. Obviously, QT-ing is the best method.
I'd do some reefcentral searching on green turf algae. It's some nasty stuff.

I did quite a bit of reading last night and it basically led me back to where I am right now, which is: no one really has any good answers on how to deal with this particular stuff.
I can't boil my rock because it's well established with hundreds of shrooms and zoa's.
You're right about Blue Tangs being an "ich magnet". They also grow to be QUITE large. I think it would outgrow my tank.
I might have to wait it out and be PATIENT. So hard. :x

Unless it's killing/affecting the corals, just live with it. Continue with water changes and heavy skimming.
And even though I killed/browned a lot of my SPS, the vodka I was dosing DID eliminate my hair algae. I do have some bits here and there, but for the most part, I don't have any.

Thanks for the input, Erik. How can you think about anything other than your new house? :D

After doing yet MORE reading :? I've adjusted the photo period of my HQ's down by 2 hours a day and am leaving the refugium light on 24/7. I'm going to stick with 4ml/day of vodka because this seems to be a comfy dose for everything.

I am noticing the algae is browning on the edges. I think this is GOOD!
