Oceans Motions scraper

Postby joel1234567 on Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:45 am

I got a new scraper from Oceans Motions with a razor blade insert that I wanted to do a review of, it was a pretty interesting product that I hadn't encountered before-

Mine, looks pretty much the same as advertised

I've been looking for a good razor scraper. Regular scrapers have blades that are ridiculously expensive to replace and don't work as well as razors. Also, scrapers with handles can't get into some tight low spots.

A similar product is the new Mag-Float Flipper-Scraper, and I was kind of excited when I first saw that too. But, at least for me, that turned out to be more gimmick than scraper, it takes like 5 minutes of back and forth to remove a piece of coralline from the glass. The "razor" is plastic and the magnet is weak. I was looking for something better.

This new scraper works great. Wipes out coralline in one swipe. It combines magfloat scraping pad power with razor power. I can edge it right up to the silicone on the joints. Gets into some tight spaces, altho with those big screws sticking out it restricts some places it can get into. I might try cutting them down a bit.

It comes with just the scraper attachment and one razor blade, so you have to buy the magnet separately and glue it on (I used gel superglue).

It took about 2 weeks to get here (from Canada) from when I ordered it. A woman emailed me after a few days and said it would ship soon. Then about a week went by and I emailed them back and they said they'd ship it out that day. Not sure what the delay was. So, that experience was a bit concerning but everything eventually ended up here.

So, overall, a very good product. Once you buy the scraper and magfloat it'll cost you about $80 which is kinda pricey for a scraper, but it probably replaces several of the less effective scrapers that I own so in the end it was worth the cost.

So if this doesn't come with the magfloat, what's stopping someone from spending $2 at Lowe's for a handheld scraper and gluing that to the magfloat?

I don't think there's anything stopping anyone from gluing anything to whatever they so choose.

Very well written and fair review Joel. Would you, now that you have experience with this product, recommended it to us fellow reefers? Sounds like it works good. What was the cost and did you have a link?

Hey Andy. The link was up at the top- it's $30. I would def recommend it, but as I mention it's a bit pricey. Like rev points out you could prob superglue something from Lowe's to a magnet and get a similar effect for much cheaper. But, in my own case, after using dozens of DIY'd scrapers with varying levels of success it was nice to find something available that filled a particular need perfectly.

This might work too if you already have a Mag Float 350.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290355156609

It would save you about $15 if you already have one kicking around :D.
A case of beer: $15

Frag Mounting Supplies: $20

A high speed rotary tool: $30

Being able to frag a $300+ coral with a steady hand before you're too drunk and have super glued your fingers together...priceless!!!

True, but then you get into the same situation I was in before. It looks to have some sort of proprietary blade, which may or may not work as good as a razor, and which may or may not cost a relatively small fortune to replace.

There are probably 18 million different ways and products to clean your glass, no doubt. I just wanted to share my own personal experience with this particular product in hopes that it may help someone out.

It seems like a good product, Joel, especially for deep tanks. I have areas in my tank that are unreachable because my arms are not long enough. I practically have to put on my snorkling gear to get at 'em. Approximately how wide is the scraper?

Heh, yeah, I have a scraper with a 12" handle and I still have to get my hands in the tank. The blade is just a standard hardware store razor blade, approximately 1.5" in width.
