Koralia Evolution Nano

Postby joel1234567 on Wed Jun 23, 2010 6:52 pm

I got a wavemaker sometime around last year. I tried hooking up the older-style Koralia pumps to it. The noise was awful when they fired up, and sometimes they went in the wrong direction. As a result the wavemaker has just been sitting in a box for months.

I decided to give the new "Evolution" series of Koralias a try with the wavemaker. They are advertised as being "timer-friendly" (which I interpret to mean that they are wavemaker-friendly, but they don't want to say that because the failure rate is probably a lot higher when hooked to a wavemaking device). I bought one of the new 450gph Koralia Evolution Nano pumps a couple weeks ago.

I hooked it up to the wavemaker and it works great. Completely 100% silent. Not even a click. It's been running over a week and I haven't heard a sound or had any problems. Looks like the Evolutions are wayyy better with a wavemaker than the last series. I'm probably going to pick up another one and run the pair in my frag tank.

Upon closer inspection, I'm not sure that these pumps are truly churning out 400+ gph. They seem significantly lower than that, altho I have no way to really gauge it... Other lower-gph-rated pumps that I have(for example, a MaxiJet 1200) seem to be moving much more water than these. It might just be that because the output nozzle is wider than the other pumps it spreads the flow out, making it appear to be lower. But, other than that, they still work silently after a few weeks of use.

That Koralia is definitely putting out more flow than the MJ1200. Like you alluded too, it's all about the pattern of the flow. The MJ1200 has a very narrow jet-stream type flow so all of it's power is concentrated in that single narrow stream but the Koralia on the other hand has a much broader flow pattern and it's power is spread throughout a very wide band so while at first glance it may appear that the MJ is putting out more flow it really isn't.

A high speed rotary tool: $30

Being able to frag a $300+ coral with a steady hand before you're too drunk and have super glued your fingers together...priceless!!!

Do you have one as well, and think it's rating is correct? I'm curious to know if anyone else has tried one and agrees with the 400gph rating. I have used several of the older-style Koralia 700-ish gph's, and they pushed some serious water. But I really struggle to believe that these are putting out close to half of that. You'd expect 2-400gph pumps in a 20g-high tank would really be pushing some water around, but it's not even rippling the surface. I got a pair of them and they're both moving the same amount of water, so I know it's not just one defective unit. I hold my hand 3-4 inches away from the pump and I can barely feel it.
